Freshta Karim is a leading Afghan children's rights activist and television presenter. As the founder and director of Charmaghz, a Kabul-based NGO, she is dedicated to promoting the education of children in Afghanistan. With her experience as a BBC Media Action board member and her contributions to publications like The Economist, Freshta is a powerful voice for the rights and empowerment of Afghan youth.
At the age of 12, Karim’s passion for connecting with others led her to become a presenter for a children’s program on local television. This experience sparked a dynamic media career, and throughout her teenage years, she worked with various radio and TV outlets, using storytelling and creativity to inspire young minds.
Karim’s drive for education took her to Panjab University, where she earned a degree in Political Science, followed by a Master’s in Public Policy from the University of Oxford, Somerville College.
In 2016, she returned to Afghanistan to found Charmaghz, an NGO dedicated to promoting education, literacy, and critical thinking among children. Charmaghz repurposes disused public buses into mobile libraries, providing children with safe spaces for reading, storytelling, and artistic expression.
Through her work, Karim continues to empower Afghanistan’s children, fostering hope and creativity in a country striving for a brighter future.
